Potassium is an electrolyte, and the body guards its level unusually tightly. Most of the body’s potassium sits inside cells; only a small fraction circulates in the blood, and that fraction has to stay within a narrow range.

Why so narrow? Because the difference in potassium concentration across a cell membrane is what allows nerves and muscle to generate electrical signals. The heart is the muscle most sensitive to this. Potassium that is too low or too high disturbs the heart’s rhythm, and both can be fatal.

That is the central point about potassium supplements, and it explains everything that follows: this is not a nutrient where more is better. It is one where the target is a range, and both ends of it are dangerous.

Slow-release matters here. Potassium chloride is intensely irritating to the gut lining. A concentrated dose can cause ulceration of the stomach or small intestine. Slow-release formulations spread the release out — which is why the tablets must be swallowed whole, never crushed, chewed or broken.
