Moringa is the dried leaf of the Moringa oleifera tree, sold as a powder, in capsules and as tea. It is taken as a general nutritional supplement — a genuine source of vitamins, minerals and protein — and marketed for a much longer list of conditions than the evidence supports.
What is Moringa?
Moringa is a food and herbal supplement, not a registered medicine, so it does not appear in the South African Medicine Price Registry. That is expected and says nothing about quality.
The tree grows readily across southern Africa, and the leaves are eaten as a vegetable as well as dried and powdered. The powder is the form most people buy.
Its nutritional content is the part that is not in dispute. Dried moringa leaf is a real source of vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium, iron, potassium, magnesium and protein, including a reasonable spread of amino acids. It also contains polyphenols and flavonoids with antioxidant activity, and compounds called isothiocyanates that are the focus of most of the research interest.
Two qualifications matter when reading the nutritional claims, which are often quoted in dramatic multiples — more iron than spinach, more vitamin C than oranges, and so on.
Those comparisons are per 100 g of dried powder against 100 g of fresh food. Drying removes water and concentrates everything. Nobody eats 100 g of moringa powder; a serving is a teaspoon or two, perhaps five grams. Comparing dried leaf to fresh fruit exaggerates the difference by roughly the water content of the fruit.
Absorption is not the same as content. The iron and calcium in leaves are plant forms, absorbed less efficiently than those from animal sources, and leaves also contain oxalates and phytates that reduce absorption further.
Moringa is a nutritious food. It is not a multivitamin in a spoon.
What is Moringa commonly used for?
Popular and traditional uses include:
- General nutrition — filling gaps in a limited diet, which is its most defensible use and where it has genuine value.
- Energy and fatigue, and blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes.
- Blood pressure and cholesterol.
- Inflammation and joint pain.
- Boosting breast milk supply, a long-standing traditional use.
- Immune support.
- Skin and hair health, both taken internally and as moringa oil.
- Digestion and constipation.
Where the evidence actually stands is worth being straight about.
Nutritional supplementation is the well-supported use. In settings where diets are limited, moringa leaf meaningfully contributes vitamins, minerals and protein, and it has been used in nutrition programmes for that reason.
Blood sugar and cholesterol show the most promising results beyond nutrition — several small human trials suggest modest reductions. The studies are small, short and varied in design. Promising is not proven.
Most of the rest is laboratory and animal work. Anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, liver-protective and anticancer effects have been shown in cells and in rodents. That is where research begins, not where it concludes, and it does not establish that a spoonful of powder does any of those things in a person.
The breastfeeding use has some small trial support, but supplements while breastfeeding should be discussed with a clinic nurse, midwife or doctor rather than started on marketing.

For persistent tiredness in particular, the useful step is a blood test rather than a supplement. Fatigue that does not lift has causes — anaemia, thyroid problems, diabetes, depression, sleep apnoea — and most are treatable once identified.
What to check on the label before taking Moringa
- Which part of the plant it is. Leaf is what the nutritional research concerns. Root and root bark should be avoided — they contain alkaloids that are potentially toxic and are not appropriate as a supplement. If the label does not say leaf, do not assume it.
- Whether it is pure leaf powder or a blend. Blends often contain a small amount of moringa with cheaper fillers.
- The amount per serving, and what a serving actually is.
- Third-party testing, particularly for heavy metals. Leaf powders concentrate what the plant takes from the soil, and contamination is a documented problem in the herbal supplement market generally.
- Country of origin and manufacturer, with a contactable local distributor.
- Any added ingredients — stimulants, sugars, undeclared “proprietary blends”.
- Expiry date and storage. Keep powder sealed, dry and out of light; it loses nutrients otherwise.
- Whether it is food-grade and intended for human consumption, rather than sold as animal feed or for agricultural use.
Safety, interactions and when to seek professional advice
Moringa leaf in food amounts has a long record of safe consumption. At supplement doses, short-term use appears well tolerated, with stomach upset, nausea, heartburn and loose stools the usual complaints — moringa has a mild laxative effect at higher intakes.
Speak to a doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you:
- Have diabetes or take blood-sugar-lowering medicines — metformin, gliclazide, insulin. Moringa may lower blood sugar, and combined with treatment can push it too low. Monitor more closely and tell your doctor you are taking it.
- Take blood pressure medicines. The same logic applies — the effects can add up.
- Take thyroid medicine (levothyroxine), where moringa may affect thyroid hormone levels.
- Take warfarin or another blood thinner, or medicines processed by the liver, where interactions are possible.
- Are pregnant. Avoid moringa supplements in pregnancy. Root, bark and flower preparations in particular have traditionally been used to stimulate the uterus.
- Are breastfeeding. Discuss it with a clinic nurse or doctor first, even though this is a common traditional use.
- Have liver or kidney disease, or are giving it to a child.
- Are taking other supplements containing vitamin A, since moringa contributes to that intake and vitamin A accumulates in the body.
Stop and seek advice for persistent stomach upset, unusual tiredness, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or episodes of low blood sugar — shakiness, sweating, confusion.
And see a doctor rather than self-treating for persistent fatigue, unexplained weight loss, uncontrolled blood sugar, or blood pressure that is not at target. A supplement alongside proper treatment is a reasonable conversation to have. A supplement instead of it is how manageable conditions become complications.
