It is easy to confuse manganese with magnesium, and they are entirely different. Magnesium is needed in hundreds of milligrams daily and deficiency is common; manganese is needed in a few milligrams and deficiency is rare. If you were told to take magnesium — for cramps, sleep or constipation — manganese is not the same thing and will not do the job.

Manganese deficiency in humans is extremely rare. It has essentially only been documented in experimental settings and in people on long-term intravenous nutrition without trace elements. It is not something a normal diet produces.

Dietary intake is generally ample. Manganese is abundant in wholegrains, nuts, legumes, leafy vegetables, tea and rice — and tea in particular is a substantial source, so anyone drinking several cups a day is getting a good deal of it.

There is no persuasive evidence that supplementing manganese in someone with a normal diet improves bone health, arthritis, energy or anything else.

So the practical answer is: most people do not need a manganese supplement. Getting it as part of a general multivitamin is harmless. Taking a high-dose standalone manganese product is unnecessary and, as below, carries a real risk that other minerals do not.

At dietary and multivitamin amounts, manganese is safe. The concerns arise with excess, and they are more serious than most people expect for a trace mineral.

Manganese accumulates in the brain, and chronic overexposure causes manganism — a neurological condition resembling Parkinson’s disease, with tremor, rigidity, slowed movement, difficulty walking, and psychiatric changes. It can be permanent.

This is best documented in welders, miners and industrial workers exposed to manganese fumes and dust, and in people on long-term intravenous nutrition whose manganese was not monitored. It has also been reported with heavy use of contaminated water and with certain drug-manufacturing exposures.

Oral supplements at ordinary doses do not cause this. The risk rises with high-dose supplementation, particularly combined with impaired clearance.

The liver clears manganese, which is why liver disease is the key risk factor.
