Citric acid is a white crystalline powder that does two jobs exceptionally well around a house: it dissolves limescale, and it fizzes when mixed with bicarbonate of soda. That makes it the active ingredient in kettle descalers, dishwasher cleaners, toilet cleaners and bath bombs — and it costs a fraction of the branded products built around it.
What is Citric Acid?
Citric acid is a weak organic acid found naturally in citrus fruit — lemons are roughly 5 to 8 per cent citric acid by weight. The powder sold for household and food use is made by fermenting sugar, not extracted from fruit, and is sold cheaply as a fine white crystalline powder by supermarkets, pharmacies, brewing suppliers and baking shops.
Two properties explain nearly every use.
It is an acid, and it chelates. It does not just dissolve limescale by being acidic — it also binds calcium and magnesium ions and holds them in solution. That is why it removes scale so effectively and stops it redepositing.
It reacts with bicarbonate of soda to make carbon dioxide. Mixed dry, nothing happens; add water and they fizz. This is the reaction behind bath bombs and effervescent tablets.
Compared with vinegar, it is stronger for the volume, has no smell, stores indefinitely as a powder, and is easier to make up to a chosen strength. For descaling, citric acid is the better tool.
It is food-grade — the sourness in sweets, the “E330” on labels — which makes it safe on things that touch food, unlike most descaling chemicals.
What is Citric Acid commonly used for?
- Descaling kettles, the commonest household use.
- Descaling coffee machines, espresso machines and steam irons.
- Cleaning dishwashers and washing machines, removing limescale and soap residue.
- Limescale on taps, showerheads, glass shower doors and tiles.

- Softening laundry water, reducing detergent needed in hard-water areas.
Common household applications
Descaling a kettle. Fill with water, add one to two tablespoons, boil, and leave 20 to 30 minutes. Pour away, rinse two or three times, and boil once more with clean water. Heavy scale may need a second round. This is the cheapest effective descaling method there is — a few cents against a branded sachet.
Coffee machines. Run the manufacturer’s descaling cycle with a citric acid solution — one to two tablespoons per litre — then several clean-water cycles. Check the manual first; a few makers specify their own product.
Dishwasher and washing machine. Two to three tablespoons in the drawer or the base of the empty machine, run hot. Removes scale and soap scum, and the stale smell from a washing machine drum.
Taps, showerheads and toilets. Soak a showerhead in a warm solution for an hour or two, wrap taps in a soaked cloth, or sprinkle the powder round a toilet bowl and waterline overnight. Scrub and rinse.
Bath bombs. Two parts bicarbonate of soda to one part citric acid by weight, a little oil, and a very small amount of witch hazel to bind. Press into moulds and dry.
It pairs with the other household staples — bicarbonate of soda and baking soda.
How to use Citric Acid appropriately
- Dissolve it in warm water — one to two tablespoons per litre for general descaling, stronger for heavy scale.
- Give it time. Twenty to thirty minutes beats scrubbing immediately; overnight for heavy limescale.
- Rinse thoroughly, particularly anything holding food or drink.
- Store it airtight and dry, and label the container — a jar of white powder is easily confused with sugar or bicarb.
- Buy food-grade. Barely more expensive, and safe on food surfaces.

Safety, surfaces and situations to avoid
Never mix it with bleach. Acid plus bleach releases chlorine gas, which is genuinely dangerous — and it usually happens when two cleaners are used in succession on the same toilet or shower. If you have used bleach, rinse thoroughly and ventilate before using anything acidic.
It is an irritant, though a mild one. It stings cut skin, irritates eyes badly, and the fine powder makes you cough.
- Wear gloves for prolonged contact or strong solutions.
- Avoid the eyes. If it gets in, rinse with plenty of water for 15 minutes and get advice if irritation persists.
- Do not breathe in the powder — pour gently rather than tipping.
- Keep it away from children and pets. Food-grade but concentrated: a mouthful can burn the mouth and throat. If a child swallows a quantity, rinse their mouth, give water and seek advice.
- Do not leave strong solutions standing where someone might mistake them for water, and ventilate in a small bathroom.
