Klonopin is the American brand name for clonazepam, a benzodiazepine used for seizures and panic disorder. Klonopin itself is not registered in South Africa — clonazepam is available here as Rivotril and generics. Dependence develops within weeks, which shapes how it is prescribed.

What is Klonopin?

Klonopin does not appear on the South African Medicine Price Registry. It is a United States brand name, and the brand is not registered with SAHPRA. The medicine itself — clonazepam — is available in South Africa, most familiarly as Rivotril, along with generic versions.

So if you have read about Klonopin, or were prescribed it abroad, clonazepam is what you would be prescribed here. Same molecule, different box.

Clonazepam is a benzodiazepine. It enhances GABA, the brain’s main inhibitory signal — the chemical that damps down neuronal activity. Boosting it produces the effects benzodiazepines are used for: raised seizure threshold, reduced anxiety, muscle relaxation and sedation.

Clonazepam is long-acting, with effects lasting well beyond a single dose. That makes it useful for conditions needing steady cover — seizures, panic disorder — and it also means next-day drowsiness is common, and the medicine accumulates with repeated dosing.

In South Africa clonazepam is Schedule 5.

The dependence problem is the central fact, and it is not a moral matter. The brain adapts to sustained GABA enhancement within two to four weeks of regular use. Once adapted, stopping produces rebound anxiety worse than the original, insomnia, tremor, sweating and — after prolonged use — seizures. Withdrawal from long-term benzodiazepines is genuinely difficult and sometimes takes months of gradual reduction.

This is why prescribing guidance worldwide limits benzodiazepines to short periods, and why a prescription that keeps being repeated deserves a conversation rather than another repeat.

None of that makes it a bad medicine. For epilepsy, panic disorder and certain movement disorders it is genuinely effective. The difficulty is duration, not the drug.

What is Klonopin commonly used for?

Two points shape how well treatment goes.

For panic disorder, the medicine is a bridge, not a destination. An SSRI plus cognitive behavioural therapy is the treatment that works long term. CBT for panic disorder has among the strongest evidence in psychiatry — it works, the gains persist after treatment ends, and it does not need tapering.

For epilepsy, this is different. Long-term anti-epileptic treatment is normal and necessary, and stopping it abruptly is dangerous — abrupt withdrawal can precipitate status epilepticus, which is life-threatening. Any change is planned with a neurologist.

What to check before using Klonopin

You cannot lawfully obtain Klonopin in South Africa, so the practical step is seeing a doctor about clonazepam or an alternative. Bring any overseas records — what you were prescribed, at what dose, and how you responded.

The most dangerous interaction is with opioids. Combining a benzodiazepine with codeine, tramadol, morphine or methadone significantly raises the risk of fatally slowed breathing, and this combination is behind a large share of overdose deaths.

Frequently asked questions

What is Klonopin used for? Seizure disorders and panic disorder. It is the American brand name for clonazepam, a benzodiazepine.

Can I get Klonopin in South Africa? Not under that brand — it is not registered with SAHPRA. Clonazepam itself is available here as Rivotril and generics.

Is Rivotril the same thing? Yes. Same active ingredient, different brand name.

Is it addictive? Dependence develops with regular use within about two to four weeks. That is why courses for anxiety are kept short and why it is never stopped abruptly.

Can I stop suddenly? No. Withdrawal causes rebound anxiety, insomnia, tremor and, after prolonged use, seizures. In epilepsy, abrupt withdrawal can cause status epilepticus, which is life-threatening.

Why am I drowsy the next day? Clonazepam is long-acting and accumulates with repeated dosing. Next-day impairment is common and affects driving.

Can I take it with tramadol or codeine? Only if your doctor has decided so deliberately. Benzodiazepines with opioids substantially raise the risk of fatally slowed breathing.

What should I use for panic attacks instead? An SSRI with cognitive behavioural therapy. CBT for panic disorder has among the strongest evidence in psychiatry, and the gains persist after treatment ends.

Is it safe to buy online? No. Counterfeit benzodiazepines are widespread and have been found to contain fentanyl.
