Durabac Pills Used For

Durabac pills contain two antibiotics: sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim. They are used to treat a variety of bacterial infections in different parts of the body.[1][2]

Durabac is commonly prescribed for the following conditions:

  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs), including kidney infections (pyelitis, pyelonephritis), urethritis, acute and chronic cystitis, cystopyelitis, and prostatitis[1][6]
  • Respiratory tract infections, such as pneumonia and Pneumocystis jirovecii (carinii) pneumonitis (PJP)[1][2][6]
  • Gastrointestinal infections like enteritis, typhoid and paratyphoid fever, typhoid carriage, bacillary dysentery, and cholera (as an adjunct to fluid and electrolyte replacement)[1][3]
  • Genital tract infections in males and females, including gonococcal infections[1]
  • Skin infections, such as pyoderma, boils, furuncles, and abscesses[1]
  • Other bacterial infections including acute brucellosis, mycetoma (except those caused by true fungi), nocardiosis, and acute or chronic osteomyelitis[1]

Durabac and similar sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim combinations are additionally used to prevent and treat some opportunistic infections in immunocompromised individuals, such as patients with HIV or organ transplants, specifically for preventing or treating Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PJP).[6]

Durabac is not effective against viral infections (such as the common cold or flu). Consult a healthcare provider to confirm the specific diagnosis and appropriateness of Durabac for your infection.[2]
