Co-Normoten is primarily used for the treatment of high blood pressure (hypertension) and works as a combination therapy, containing losartan potassium (an angiotensin II receptor blocker) and hydrochlorothiazide (a thiazide diuretic). This fixed-dose combination is indicated when single-agent therapy is insufficient to control blood pressure[2].
By combining an angiotensin II receptor antagonist and a diuretic, Co-Normoten helps:
- Lower elevated blood pressure in patients with essential hypertension
- Reduce the risk of complications associated with high blood pressure, such as stroke and heart attack[2]
- Manage fluid retention by promoting diuresis
Co-Normoten is not usually the first-line therapy and is recommended for patients whose blood pressure is not adequately controlled by either component alone[2]. It is also important to note that the drug should be used with caution in patients with severe renal or hepatic impairment, diabetes, or a history of allergy or asthma because certain side effects might be more prevalent in these groups[2].
