What is Lubricant?
A lubricant puts a film between two surfaces so they slide rather than grind. That film reduces wear, cuts noise, lowers the effort needed to move something, and often keeps moisture off bare metal.

Rubber seals and weatherstripping. Use silicone, which keeps rubber supple. Petroleum-based oils make rubber swell and perish.
Tools going into storage. A thin oil film on bare metal keeps rust off — done before the damp season, not after.
How to use Lubricant appropriately
- Clean the surface first. Lubricant over grit becomes an abrasive.
- Use less than you think. Excess does not lubricate better; it drips, stains and collects dust.
- Match it to the material. Silicone for rubber and plastic; dry lubricants for locks; grease for heavy loads; light oil for small fast-moving parts.
- Apply precisely, using the straw on an aerosol so it lands where needed.
- Protect what is nearby. Overspray travels further than expected, and oil on a floor is a fall risk.
- Re-apply periodically — outdoor hinges and gate mechanisms need it far more often than indoor ones.
- Keep a food-grade product for anything touching food. General workshop lubricants are not food-safe.
- Store containers upright, sealed, away from heat and out of reach of children.
