Vimovo Tablets What Are They Used For

Vimovo tablets are a combination medication containing naproxen (a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, NSAID) and esomeprazole (a proton pump inhibitor, PPI). Naproxen works by reducing inflammation, pain, and fever, while esomeprazole helps decrease stomach acid to protect against ulcers that can be caused by NSAIDs[5].

Vimovo is mainly used to:

  • Treat symptoms of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis in adults[3][4][5].
  • Provide symptomatic relief for juvenile idiopathic arthritis in adolescents aged 12 years and older weighing at least 38 kg[6].
  • Decrease the risk of developing gastric ulcers in patients who require long-term NSAID therapy and are at increased risk for NSAID-associated gastric ulcers[3][4][5][6].

It may also be used to manage mild to moderate pain such as postoperative pain, postpartum pain, migraine, primary dysmenorrhea, musculoskeletal inflammation, and soft tissue inflammation[1].

Vimovo is generally prescribed for people who both need anti-inflammatory pain relief and are at risk of stomach issues from NSAIDs. It is not recommended as initial treatment for acute pain, because the naproxen component is absorbed more slowly compared to other naproxen formulations[3][6].
