Metronidazole 500 mg is an antibiotic used to treat a variety of infections caused by certain bacteria and parasites. It is commonly prescribed for:
- Bacterial vaginosis (an infection in women caused by harmful vaginal bacteria)[2][4][5]
- Trichomoniasis (a sexually transmitted infection)[1][2][3]
- Amebiasis (intestinal or liver infection caused by parasites)[1][2][6]
- Giardiasis (parasitic intestinal infection)[1]
- Pelvic inflammatory disease[4][7]
- Gum and dental infections (including dental abscesses and gum disease)[4][7]
- Skin infections and rosacea (topical forms)[1][7]
- Infections in the abdomen, heart, bones, joints, central nervous system, and respiratory tract caused by anaerobic bacteria (such as Bacteroides and Clostridium species)[1][2][3][5]
- Bloodstream (septicemia) and gynecological infections[2][3][5]
- Prevention of infections after certain surgeries, especially involving the colon or reproductive organs[1][3]
Metronidazole is taken by mouth, usually as a tablet, but may also be given as a capsule, liquid, suppository, or injection depending on the infection and patient need[5][7]. It works by stopping the growth of sensitive bacteria and parasites[5].
It is important to complete the full prescribed course, even if symptoms improve before finishing the medication[8]. Avoid alcohol during treatment and for a few days after, as mixing the two can cause a serious reaction[2][7].
