Ranceph 500 is an antibiotic capsule containing cefalexin, used to treat various bacterial infections caused by susceptible microorganisms[1][2][3].
- Respiratory tract infections: Such as those caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae and group A β-haemolytic streptococci[1][4].
- Middle ear infections (otitis media): Due to staphylococci, streptococci, H. influenzae, and N. catarrhalis[1][3].
- Skin and soft tissue infections: Caused by susceptible staphylococci and/or streptococci[1][3].
- Genitourinary tract infections: Including urinary tract infection and acute prostatitis, typically caused by E. coli, P. mirabilis, and Klebsiella[1][3].
- Dental infections: Caused by staphylococci and streptococci[1][3].
The usual dosage for adults is 500 mg every 12 hours or 250 mg every 6 hours. Dosage may be adjusted based on infection severity, patient age, and kidney function. For children, dosage recommendations differ and the capsules may not be suitable for very young patients[1][2][3].
Ranceph 500 should only be used for bacterial infections; it is not effective against viral illnesses such as the common cold[5][6].
Precautions include checking for allergies to cephalosporin antibiotics, possible interactions with kidney problems, and completion of the full prescribed course to prevent antibiotic resistance[1][2][3].
